Sharif Medical Research Center (SMRC)

Sharif Medical Research Center (SMRC) was established in 2016 with the rationale of conducting an active advocacy program to initiate, promote and support research in basic and clinical medical and dental sciences, as well as medical and dental education, at par with international standards. Its objectives are aligned with the requirements of Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) which promote and facilitate collaborative research, enhance research infrastructure and networking capacity, increase and effectively manage the resources, provide education and training in research-related skills. Its focus is to support synergies between research, teaching and learning, while ensuring that the outcome of research is transferred to the community.

Regular sessions are convened by Dr. Muhammad Adnan Khan, Executive Director SMRC. The faculty members associated with SMRC and Ethics Committee are appointed by the Executive Director SMRC, and represent each of the domains of research in health sciences, i.e. basic medical/dental sciences, clinical medical/dental sciences and medical/dental education. The respective members are actively involved in quality control of research proposals, prior to presentation in SMRC meetings. Detailed evaluation of research proposals and constructive feedback are hallmarks of SMRC protocol, which ensure conducting world-class research through professionalism and excellence.

Clinical trials, after getting approval from SMRC, are registered with ClinicalTrials.gov which is a resource provided by the U.S. National Library of Medicine. It is a database of privately and publicly funded clinical studies conducted around the world. This registration contributes substantially to improve clinical trial transparency and reduce publication bias and selective reporting.

The quality enhancement of research proposals has always been a priority, with a twofold goal to present and justify the need to study a research problem and to explore the practical ways in which the proposed study should be conducted. The sensitization and participation of under-graduates and fresh graduates regarding research is a remarkable trend observed in recent years, under supervision of senior faculty members and mentors at Sharif Medical and Dental College.
